Why you Need to Add Southeast Kansas to Your List...

You need to add Southeast Kansas to your list!

If a gorilla safari, stepping into the Cars movie, climbing inside of the world's largest shovel, or reading books to cats sounds like your idea of fun then you need to get to Southeast Kansas!

We spent a weekend here and had so much fun. My kids wouldn't let us leave without me promising that we would come back.

A big thank you to Visit Crawford County for partnering with us on this trip and sponsoring this email.

Here are a few of our favorite stops if you’re planning a visit:

Pittsburg

This is such a cute town with tons of restaurants, shops, and a deep mining history. My kids loved spotting the gorillas all around town, which are a nod to Pittsburg State University’s mascot. Be sure to stop by Gorilla Village Champions Plaza on the east side of Carnie Smith Stadium.

We also visited the Literary Cat Co, where adoptable cats roam the shop. One of my daughters cried when we left, so just be prepared to have to promise your kids you'll be back.

Big Brutus

This was my personal favorite stop. It’s the world’s largest electric shovel. I thought it would be big, but this was so much bigger than I could even fathom. Check out this video to see just how big it is.

For reference, my head didn’t even reach the top of the wheels! I have been to 47 countries and never seen anything like this. You can actually climb up and pretend to operate it.

Downtown Galena

This area is full of Route 66 charm and fun little stops.

  • Mural Park is a great place to stop and snap a few photos with the Route 66 marker and colorful murals.
  • Gearhead Curios is such a unique spot with great retro photo ops, including the Hudson Hornet from the Cars movies and an old Route 66 gas station. The bathroom is so interesting that someone actually got married inside.
  • Cars on the Route makes you feel like you're stepping into the Cars movie. Snap a photo with your favorite characters like Mater and Lightning McQueen.
  • You can drive through the Route 66 shield, Centennial Arch.

Crawford State Park

If you’re looking for some outdoor time, this is a great stop. There’s a lake, beach, playground, camping, and even a fish hatchery.

What road trip destination should I check out next?

Thank you!

Thank you so much for supporting me! It means so much to me that you’re here. I hope that I can provide value for you and your family, so you’re inspired to get out and explore more! Happy adventuring!

Summer fun in Kansas City, MO
