The Best Tips for Fall Camping Adventures! 🏕️🍂🍁

The Best Season for Camping

If you ask me, fall is the best season for family camping. The kids love collecting leaves, we love sitting by the fire, and no one wakes up sweating in the tent (hallelujah). I also love nature even more when there are fewer mosquitos and ticks.

Camping is one of the most affordable ways to get outdoors, travel, and spend time with your family. Even if you just stay at a state park cabin, it's still usually cheaper than a hotel and more fun.

4 Tips for Camping with Kids

Here are a few quick tips that make fall camping easier with kids:

  • Pack Extra Layers – Nights get chilly fast in the Midwest.
  • Plan Warm Meals – Soup + hot cocoa hit differently when it’s 50° out. You can cook some meals at home and then just warm them up over the campfire or camp stove to make meal times easier.
  • Bring Lights – The sun sets earlier, so headlamps & lanterns are a must.
  • Halloween Celebrations at Campgrounds- Many campgrounds have Halloween celebrations the weekend before or after Halloween. People decorate their campsites and hand out candy. (If you’re near Kansas City, Smithville Lake has a popular Halloween celebration.) Be sure to check and see if a state park near you has something like that!

Gear That Has Saved Us on Fall Trips:

Collapsible Camp Chairs

I am obsessed with these padded rocking chairs. We have two of them. Sometimes I take them outside and work from the yard because I like the vibes and they are so comfy.

Outdoor Blanket

We have one like this because one side keeps us warm or the other can be thrown on the ground as a picnic blanket. I just keep it in the car for adventures.

Insulated Mug

We have one of these for everyone in our family. We use them for hot apple cider and hot cocoa when we camp and throughout the winter when we have fire pit nights. My husband and I also use them for our coffee.

Kansas and Missouri Camping Spots

I pinned our favorite Midwest campgrounds and family-friendly parks on my Kansas and Missouri Map. Perfect if you’re planning a fall weekend under the stars.

I wanted to give you another way you could support my small business and a way that I could thank you! I asked 5,000 people what their biggest problems were that held them back from exploring more. One of the biggest issues was overwhelm...

I was planning to send a Black Friday email today, but I had a revelation this week and I wanted to share it with you instead. You know those moments when something hits you out of nowhere and makes you stop and smile? I had one of those this week. I was thinking about this community and how much it has grown. When I first started sharing our adventures, I wasn’t sure anyone in KC even wanted to get outside as much as I did. I definitely didn’t expect to find so many people who love exploring...

Stay Warm This Winter A few years ago I read the book, No Such Thing as Bad Weather and it changed the way I thought about winter. Before that, I really struggled to get outside in the winter, but I had also never invested in good clothes to keep me warm or learned how to layer properly. Once I got myself decent weather clothes, it made winter so much more tolerable, I daresay, enjoyable even! I still usually hit my winter weather limit around mid-February, but being able to get outdoors...
