Weird & Fun Places to Visit in Missouri
Elephant Rocks State Park + Johnson Shut-Ins State Park
These are close enough together that you can easily turn them into one epic weekend adventure.
Elephant Rocks feels exactly like it sounds, with giant granite boulders lined up like a parade of elephants. Kids LOVE climbing all over them. (And adults do too.) It feels like nature accidentally made a giant playground.
Then, nearby, Johnson Shut-Ins gives you one of the coolest swimming spots in Missouri. The rock formations create natural water slides, pools, and rushing channels that feel different from a normal lake or beach day.
A few things I learned:
- Water shoes are absolutely worth bringing
- The rocks get HOT in summer
- Your kids will somehow still not want to leave
This whole area feels more like Arkansas or Tennessee than what people picture when they think of Missouri.
Rocky Falls
This waterfall is one of those places that feels way too pretty to be hiding in Missouri. Rocky Falls is tucked into the Ozarks and has this gorgeous round swimming area beneath the falls that makes it feel almost tropical in the middle of summer.
It is not a huge hike either, which makes it especially great for families. This is one of those places where your kids immediately ask if they can swim before you have even finished parking the car.
Alley Mill
This place looks straight out of a postcard. The bright red mill sitting beside the spring water is gorgeous, peaceful, and photogenic. The spring itself is beautiful, and the whole area feels calm and easy to explore with kids.
Dillard Mill
If you love old historic places with hidden gem energy, Dillard Mill is such a fun stop. The giant old mill, creek, covered bridge vibes, and surrounding scenery make it feel like stepping into another time period. It is quieter than some of the more famous Missouri attractions too, which can be really nice during summer.
Fantastic Caverns- Springfield, Missouri
This place is one of the most unique cave tours we have done because you ride through the cave instead of walking it. The caves are perfect for hot summer days, especially if you have little kids or grandparents who can't do long hikes.
The formations inside are beautiful, and the whole experience feels relaxing. Also, cave temperatures in July feel like emotional support.
Uranus Fudge Factory
I mean… if you know, you know.
This roadside stop fully commits to the joke, and that level of dedication deserves respect. There is fudge, quirky gifts, weird signs, random attractions, and approximately 4,000 dad jokes happening at all times. Teenagers especially seem to think this place is hilarious.
Whether you stop because you are genuinely curious or because your kids saw the billboard and refused to move on with life until you visited, it is definitely memorable.
Turtle Park- St. Louis
This playground is exactly what it sounds like: giant concrete turtles that kids can climb all over.
Simple? Yes.
Extremely fun? Also yes.
It is also a great add-on stop if you are already exploring Forest Park or doing a St. Louis weekend.
The Rabbit Hole- Kansas City
This place is absolutely magical if your kids love books.
The Rabbit Hole is an immersive children’s literature museum where you walk through giant storybook-inspired exhibits and interactive spaces.
It feels whimsical and nostalgic for adults too.
This is one of those places where everyone leaves wanting to immediately reread childhood books.
