Best Midwest Trails for Fall Hiking (with Kids!) 🍁🥾

Time to Hit the Trails

Fall is my favorite season to hike! There is just something about the colorful trees, crunchy leaves, and cooler weather that makes me happy. Plus the kids actually enjoy being outside because they aren’t melting in the heat.

This week I am headed to New England for a fall road trip with my husband to celebrate our 10-year anniversary. This is a bucket list trip for me, and I can’t wait to peep every leaf I can. If you’re looking for some places closer to home to hike, I have your back. ⬇️

Trails that Shine in the Fall

Harpst Trail- Weston Bend State Park

The Harpst Trail is one of my favorites in the fall because the trees change bright yellow. The section of the trail that takes you to the Missouri River Overlook is paved, but the rest of the trail is unpaved. It is only .7 miles long but classified as moderate because it is steep at points and rocky. My kids have been hiking it since they were three, so it isn’t too hard.

Ernie Miller Nature Park – Olathe, KS

This is one of my go-to quick hiking spots when we want a burst of fall color without committing to a full day. We like taking the 1.8-mile Upper Ridge Trail because there are fun steppingstones across the river and stone steps that add a fun element. Plus, it’s got good views of all the foliage!

Parkville Nature Sanctuary

This small sanctuary packs in a lot of beauty. With 3 miles of trails, you’ll find waterfalls, wooden boardwalks, and wooded ravines that absolutely glow in October. Even though it’s minutes from downtown Parkville, it feels tucked away and peaceful. We like to take the Old Kate Trail. It is a short, kid-friendly trail with a small waterfall that looks beautiful framed by fall leaves.

Hiking Gear We Always Pack

Kid-sized Hiking Backpacks

We got these in 2022 and still use them. I am glad they are small because my kids try to cram everything they could ever dream of into their packs before we hike. They also love the whistles on the chest straps. The bladder also helps them stay hydrated on our hikes.

First Aid Kit

I always carry this tiny first aid kit. It’s come in handy so many times, mostly for bandaids, but it also gives me peace of mind.

ThermKids Lightweight Jacket

I love the brand ThermKids. We have been using them for years. We have used their lightweight shells and mid-weight fleece lined jackets in the fall. Both are great, but if you only want to get one, I recommend getting the shell and lining it with a fleece or jacket you already have. Use code OUTDOORFAM for 10% off!

Thank You for Supporting My Small Business! Happy Small Business Saturday! Every time you open an email, read a blog, share a reel, or buy one of my products, you support my small business in such a real way. It means more to me and my family than you know. I wanted to give you another way you could support my small business and a way that I could thank you! I asked 5,000 people what their biggest problems were that held them back from exploring more. One of the biggest issues was overwhelm...

I was planning to send a Black Friday email today, but I had a revelation this week and I wanted to share it with you instead. You know those moments when something hits you out of nowhere and makes you stop and smile? I had one of those this week. I was thinking about this community and how much it has grown. When I first started sharing our adventures, I wasn’t sure anyone in KC even wanted to get outside as much as I did. I definitely didn’t expect to find so many people who love exploring...

A girl sitting in the snow smiling because she dressed well for winter

Stay Warm This Winter A few years ago I read the book, No Such Thing as Bad Weather and it changed the way I thought about winter. Before that, I really struggled to get outside in the winter, but I had also never invested in good clothes to keep me warm or learned how to layer properly. Once I got myself decent weather clothes, it made winter so much more tolerable, I daresay, enjoyable even! I still usually hit my winter weather limit around mid-February, but being able to get outdoors...
